  • Pros

Tower configuration gives the system lots of expansion space. Decent price. Good performance numbers. Environmentally friendly.

  • Cons

Tower takes up a lot of desk or floor space. Perhaps more corporate-oriented than small-business-oriented. Not available in ultra-small form factor.

  • Bottom Line

Think of the Lenovo ThinkCentre M58e as the less expensive, more mainstream member of the M58 series. It shows that 'entry level' doesn't have to mean stripped.

The Lenovo ThinkCentre M58e ($763 direct) is kind of like the entry-level brother of the M58p's. Some of the same options are available: a range of Intel processors, full-size hard drives and optical drives, and so on. The M58e is a bit less expensive for a similar configuration, too. It has many of the same strengths as the M58p, but it is a little lower-performing. As a result, it may be a good choice for those who want a Lenovo desktop but don't want to pay as much for the system.

The M58e I looked at comes in a tower configuration, but it is also available in a small-form-factor chassis. Unlike the M58p, however, the M58e is not available in the even-more-petite ultra-small form factor. There's plenty of space in the tower for extras, which makes this a great choice for people with older internal hardware they need to continue using. The m58e has three expansion slots open: namely PCI, PCIe x1, and PCIe x16. So, for instance, you could install an old PCI video capture card, a PCIe x1 wireless networking card, and a PCIe x16 graphics card. PCI is also useful for legacy hardware such as cards that physically unlock software or cards that support aging tech, say, laser bar-code scanners. There's space for at least one more optical drive or hard drive in the chassis as well.

The M58e comes with an Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 processor and Intel GMA 4500 chipset, which means that it is ready for most mainstream business tasks. The combo gives the M58e Intel vPro certification, so just about all business software can run on it, and it is manageable by your IT folks with standardized inventory control and support software. The vPro designation means that the system can also handle virtual machine (VM) environments through Intel VT, which gives future users the ability to use XP mode in Windows 7, or create VM environments so you can try out new software without affecting the standard company OS and applications.

The ThinkCentre M58e is a middle-of-the-road performer when compared with recently tested business PCs such as the HP Compaq dc7900 Ultra-Slim. It achieved a score of 3,802 points on the PCMark Vantage test, which was almost exactly the average of the five business-oriented PCs (and one Mac) we've looked at recently. This means it will also be middle-of-the-road when performing day-to-day tasks. The Lenovo's 56-second score on the Windows Media Encoder test was a little better than average, but its 3:22 Photoshop CS4 score was just average.

The M58e earns our GreenTech Approved rating for much the same reasons as the M58p: The system has EPEAT Gold certification and meets Energy Star requirements, and Lenovo has made significant efforts to make its products environmentally friendly; these include working with the GreenGuard Environmental Institute and collaborating with Advanced Energy Group to make the M series compatible with solar charger packs. Lenovo also offers a free take-back program for all its electronic products (including shipping for Lenovo products) and products from other makers (if you send them in on your own dime). The case may be black, but Lenovo's M series desktops are green through and through.

As mentioned above, the M58e is available in a small form factor as well but the tower I reviewed is a great choice for users who need add-on cards or extra internal hard drives. The larger case allows for a regular hard drive and optical drive and means that the system can be priced lower than small-form-factor PCs like the HP Compaq dc7900 and Lenovo ThinkCentre M58p. The M58p also has a faster, more expensive processor that adds to its price. The Acer Veriton X270-ED7400C is a lot less expensive, even with its small-form-factor case, but it was also slower overall on our tests, and it doesn't have the IT-friendly features that the HP and Lenovo models do, such as OS image stability, Intel vPro, and remote management features.

The Lenovo ThinkCentre M58e is a middle-of-the-road business PC, both in performance and features, though it does have the added benefits of Intel vPro and IT-friendly features. It's certainly worth a look if you need a PC environment that can grow with your business.
